Kavungal Amakkode Abdul Rahman popularly known as Adhrehyaka or simply Adreyi lived in valillapuzha near the bank of chaliyar.He was the son of Kavungal kunjhoyi Haji and Poothottathil Biyyakutty Hajjumma and was married to Zainaba.He was elected to Vazhakkad panjayath in 1963.With powerful initiation and action against the large scale industry, Gwaliyor Rayons, which adversely affects the life of villagers by known water and air pollution, he is considered as the founder of chaliyar agitation struggle in kerala state.
When the dense forest becomes barren, surging river turned to poisonous, breathing air become deadly poison, Rahman sahib marked out to public about the problems and need of public protest against the company.
"There was not enough fresh air to breathe; nostrils reeked of mercury. Diseases devoured their victims at a frightening pace. malformation of babies had multiplied. Cancer, heart attacks, respiratory diseases, failing vision and retardation of mental faculties were quite common here"
"The Birla's can't make a river on their own, however much they try. A 168 km stretch of a river with all its branches and tributaries. They can build more factories. It is this river that is so dear to us. It is chaliyar that we have been depending on for drinking, bathing and all for our needs. we must regain its old serenity. This is a struggle for the right to live. You can do take part in this struggle as a human being by sharing our concerns and helping us. we are confident that all the good people in the world are with us".
He explained his dream to the villagers: "All I wish is to see my river come back to life just once. see the fish leap in the sun. and see that my people don't have to die more like i will "
When his dream comes true by early 2000's, he was not alive. He was also the same victim of what he struggled for. He died of cancer in 1999 January 11. He was the first person in India whom formed the first public agitation against air and water pollution.
